Asset Management Practice
The asset management market is going through a period of major change. As with any change, this gives rise to a combination of opportunities as well as challenges. However, the market is probably in as strong a position as it has ever been after experiencing considerable growth over the last few years.
The industry will always be sensitive to changes in the financial markets, such as the ‘credit crunch’, because of the diversity of assets used in the continuing search for value. There are other issues though that affect changes over the long term, not least the FSA’s Retail Distribution Review.
2007 saw continued high demand for staffing solutions as asset management businesses implemented their growth plans. This trend - which began at the end of 2005 - has continued, and initial signs are strong for the first quarter of 2008 although a dampening of demand is anticipated later in the year.
The number of people placed in this sector has continued to rise but the rate of this growth is slowing.
The single biggest factor within the sector continues to be skill shortages. This increases the pressure on proactive recruitment activity and on the need for headcount retention.
This also means the issue of ‘counter-offers’ remains prevalent, as well as instances where staff have been guaranteed bonuses in order to retain them.
